Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed!
I took one curl down just to check and see, and it worked! I'll have to control myself so I don't end up curling every doll's hair! It looks like tight spiral curls, too, so she's going to look very different from my other American Girl dolls.
I'll share photos as soon as I can.

Can't wait to see the pics, Melissa - I might have to try this with some of my dolls, too! What kind of curlers (and what size) did you use, and what direction did you roll them to get the spiral curls?

Here are the before and after photos (at the bottom of the page):

Penney, I put the doll into the water from the back, the way that a hairstylist puts a person's head in the sink when working with it. That way her eyes and face didn't get wet. Her face steamed up, and I was worried about that, but there wasn't any damage. I was really careful (for example, using water that had come to a slight boil with tiny bubbles), but because I was so careful I ended up missing one of the curls.
To keep the water from dripping afterward, I wrapped the hair up in a small hand towel until it cooled.
Jeanette M., I didn't use real curlers. I was worried that the ones we have at our house would pull the hair out or melt. I also wanted it to look natural, with curls that weren't uniform. So I randomly put curls in. I think I would have liked it better if I had taken the time to put them in carefully. I used the rag-roll method of the olden days.

How do you do this without getting water in your dolls eyes?
